Coaching is more than just a job to parish coaches

According to legendary NFL coach Bum Phillips, "there are two types of coaches in this world. Those that are fired and those that are going to be fired."

With almost 30 state championships in prep football that the schools in Ouachita Parish have won over the years, the pressure on our local coaches to win might seem like pros.

At West Monroe High School, Louisiana Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame Coach Don Shows knows a few things about putting together a successful coaching staff.

Before Shows arrived at West Monroe in 1989, the Rebels were an after thought to the dominating football programs of Neville, Ruston, Ouachita Parish, Ouachita Christian and Wossman. In four years at the helm, Shows and his staff turned around the West Monroe football program by winning its first Class 5A state title in 1993.

What has followed has been series of seasons that have put the Rebels on the national map as one of the top prep football programs in the country for winning and producing top talent.
