ULM grapples with millions in budget cuts

The best days lie ahead for the University of Louisiana-Monroe, in spite of a 9.1-percent budget cut for the current fiscal year.

That's the assessment ULM President Nick Bruno delivered at a news conference Tuesday morning. Earlier Tuesday, Bruno sent an e-mail to ULM faculty and staff outlining the university's fiscal health.

"In total, our operating budget has decreased $7,330,515 or 9.1 percent from July 1, 2011, which includes mid-year, end-of-year and group benefits funding reductions," said Bruno' email.

"Much of these reductions were realized through the elimination of 53 positions, including some in restricted funds, since July 1, 2011," Bruno wrote.
