Vernon Street canal project developing slowly

With summer doldrums in full swing, the Ouachita Parish Police Jury turned its attention to some housekeeping measures Monday night.

Police jurors discussed a number of ongoing projects during their regular meeting, including an effort to improve drainage in western Ouachita Parish.

Property owners along Vernon Street could see movement in the near future on a canal project aimed at improving drainage there.

Police Juror Mack Calhoun has pressed for motion on the Vernon Street Canal for more than a year. Parish consulting engineer Kevin Crosby said it was too soon to say when construction would begin, but the process was moving forward through the earliest stages to purchase the property necessary to complete the project.
"We're pulling the ownership info on it right now to start acquiring some rights-of-way," Crosby said.
