BESE sets voucher standards

The state's Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved an accountability system for private and parochial schools that participate in the new Louisiana Scholarship Program.

The system, which BESE approved Tuesday by a vote of 10-2, requires that all students using the scholarships must take the same state-mandated tests that students attending traditional public schools have to take.

State Education Superintendent John White said the accountability rules show that schools participating in the Scholarship Program understand that student achievement is paramount.
