Mount Vernon celebrates 175th homecoming

When the first worshipers stepped through the doors of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Martin Van Buren was president, Louisiana had been a state for just 25 years, and the first wagon trains were beginning to make their way along what would eventually be known as the Oregon Trail.

In just a few weeks, Mount Vernon Baptist Church will celebrate their 175th Anniversary.

"There aren't too many churches who've been in one location for this period of time, especially considering Louisiana is only 200 years old," said Mount Vernon administrator Rick McPherson.
