You could call teaching a tradition for Dr. Amy Weems.

"It's kind of a family legacy. I always knew that was what I wanted to do. I'm a third generation Home Ec teacher, although now it's called Family and Consumer Sciences. That's what I love," said Weems.

Weems, a native of the Catahoula Parish town of Enterprise, teaches seventh and eighth graders at Ouachita Junior High School. Last week, the state Department of Education named her the 2013 Louisiana Teacher of the Year in the annual competition.

The event's presenting sponsor was the non-profit organization Dream Teachers, founded in 2007 to recognize outstanding educators and encourage excellence.
How long has she been teaching? Weems said that's complicated. She taught as an adjunct at Louisiana Tech beginning in 1998, then was a classroom teacher at West Monroe High School for three and a half years. After that, she spent seven years in higher education. She's been back in K-12 for two years, while also serving as an adjunct at ULM.
