Concerns raised about inmate population

A spike in population at Ouachita Correctional Center has some members of the Ouachita Parish Police Jury concerned that budget woes at the parish jail could be on the horizon.

During a meeting of the Police Jury finance committee Monday evening, Police Juror Pat Moore questioned parish treasurer Brad Cammack about an increase in headcount at OCC. Specifically, Moore noted that the increase was due at least in part to an increased number of pretrial detainees.

Police Juror Walt Caldwell, who chairs the finance committee, agreed with Moore's concerns, but said much of the increase in pretrial detainees was normal.
