Have you ever been a slave?

One day Jesus was teaching a large crowd of Jews, including their religious leaders… scribes and pharisees. 

He said, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."  They responded by reminding Jesus that they were the descendants of Abraham and "have never been in bondage (slaves) to any man.  Then they added, "How can you say we may be made free?"  Jesus replied, "Whoever commits sin is in bondage (slavery) to sin."  (John 8"33-34).

What a shocker! Those men said they had never been in bondage. The truth is, they had been slaves in Egypt for 400 years and, at the very time they were speaking, they were in political bondage to Rome and, as Jesus told them, all who had sinned were in bondage to sin.
