We thought we were NASCAR drivers

You would have thought that we were training to become NASCAR drivers as we learned to drive on the back roads near Crowville. Well, we thought we were race car drivers.

The track stretched from my Granddaddy Payne's house all the way to Uncle Alton's and Uncle Rufus's houses that were there on Bayou Macon some five miles away. One of us would drive from Granddaddy Payne's to our uncles' houses and then another person would drive on the way back. Learning to drive on these country gravel roads prepared my brother, Devone, several cousins, Don Payne and Fabian Geisman, and me for the big day that every teenager looks forward to: the day that we would take the driving test for our driver's license. We were already advanced students by the time this important event would take place.
