Counselor's Corner: Raising responsible children

The last Counselor's Corner column addressed the fact that more children seem to have a false sense of entitlement these days. So how can parents challenge that false sense of entitlement, and why is it so important to do so?

It is critical to challenge them because once your child grows up and goes out into the real world, he will have to work for what he wants, just like everyone else. As a parent, it's important to teach children the value of hard work and earning things. They need to actually see the connection between making an effort and achieving success. On the other hand, when things are handed to a child, the message he's getting from you is, "You don't need to do anything—everything will be given to you in life just because you're you."
