Sheets back to MLB - ULM alumnus Ben Sheets wins debut with Braves
Former ULM Warhawk pitcher Ben Sheets, who made his first MLB start in nearly two years, didn't disappoint as he tossed six strong innings Sunday in the Braves' 6-1 victory over the New York Mets at Turner Field in Atlanta.
Sheets (1-0) surrendered just two hits and one walk while striking out five in his 2012 debut. Aer allowing just one base runner in the first two innings, Sheets ran into trouble in the third as the Mets had runners on second and third.
The right-hander kept the Mets off of the scoreboard as he forced David Wright to fly out to right field.
After back-to-back perfect innings in the fourth and fifth, Sheets got plenty of run support as Atlanta scored six runs off of New York starter, Johan Santana. Michael Bourn started the big inning for Braves with a RBI double left and Freddie Freeman capped the inning with a three-run homer to right to give the Braves a 6-0 lead after five complete.
In the sixth, Sheets notched his fourth perfect inning of the contest and was pinch-hit for in the home half of the inning.
The Braves used three pitchers to close out the contest and the Braves' bullpen surrendered just one run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Santana took the loss for the Mets and dips to 6-6 on the season.
