Living up to the words of a big brother: 'Follow me'

My oldest brother Devone, Jr. was a 185-pound bull that ran from the fullback position. He could run like a deer and had the power of a big bull.

Defenders did not want to get in his way. The late Coach Bill Ruple would always remind me of a run Devone Jr. made in the state championship game against Thibodaux. Devone had spent the entire week having his left shoulder worked on by Coach Ruple.

The score was 6-0 at halftime in favor of Thibodaux. On the first series of the second half, Devone broke loose on a 70-yard touchdown. Not many fullbacks could outrun everybody on the field, but on this night, everyone watched as this powerful runner completely demolished everything that got in his way.
