Breard shares local historical information
The NELA Genealogical & Historical Society met Sunday, June 10, at the main library on Stubbs Avenue in Monroe.
James Free conducted the meeting and gave the financial report. Margie Brown read the report of the last meeting.
Lourine Baff gave an update on the 1940 census. She said that the government had called for volunteers from each state for index help and New York turned out so many that they have completed their name index already.
Dot Roebuck gave some history of the Venus event that took place on June 5, 2012. She told about a relative she had back in 1874 who was a superintendent of Naval Observatories. He asked the government for money to purchase a very large lens to view that event. It was approved at a cost of $20,000, which would equal about $400,000 in today's economy. There was more discussion from others about this event.
