ULM lives to play another day behind 6-3 win over Belmont

Behind the pitching of Cale Wine and Kendall Thamm, the University of
Louisiana – Monroe Warhawks survived elimination with a 6-3 victory
over the third seeded Belmont Bruins (39-24) in the NCAA Baton Rouge
Regional at Alex Box Stadium on Saturday.

ULM (32-29) started Wine who pitched masterfully before Belmont got
to him in the fifth that tied the score 3-3. Thamm entered the
ballgame in relief and earned his seventh victory of the season
without allowing a run to the Bruins.

Wine, who retired the side in the first four innings, pitched 4.1
innings where he allowed five hits, three earned runs and struck out
two batters.

"I am so proud of our guys," ULM Coach Jeff Shexnaider said. "What a
great ball club Belmont is. To have the opportunity to play them was
an honor in itself. We got a lead and then they were able to answer
back. During that inning, Kendall (Thamm) came on and from then on he
was dynamite the rest of the way. You've got to get the timely hits
and we were able to do that today."

ULM got on the board first in the third inning thank to a RBI
groundout by Caleb Clowers that scored Sun Belt MVP Jeremy Sy who was
on third base. Sy advanced to third thanks to his one out triple.
The Warhawks added two more runs in the fourth to make the score 3-0.

With the win, fourth seeded ULM advances to play number two seeded
Oregon State on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in another elimination game at
Alex Box. The Oregon State Beaver fell to the first seeded LSU Tigers
7-1 in Saturday's night cap game in Baton Rouge.

Coach Shexnaider would not confirm who would start on the mound for
the Warhawks. Shexnaider said that he was going to discuss it with
pitching coach Justin Hill and determine a game plan for Oregon State.
ULM has yet to use junior right handers Shelby Aulds (West Monroe
High School alum) or Andrew Richardson who have both starting
experience for ULM this season.

The winner of the ULM – Oregon State matchup will advance to the
championship round against LSU. The championship game is slated for
7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Being LSU is undefeated in the Baton Rouge Regional, their opponent
(either ULM or Oregon State) will have to beat the Tigers twice to
advance to next week's Super Regional series. If necessary, game two
with the Tigers will take place on Monday at Alex Box Stadium.

ULM advanced to the championship round of the 2000 Baton Rouge
regional before falling to LSU (the eventual national champion) 5-3 at
the old Alex Box Stadium.
