Police jury considers road districts

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury is considering creating special tax districts to finance road repairs throughout the parish.

For several years, the Police Jury's public works department has operated at a significant deficit. This year, the Police Jury anticipates a $1.4-million deficit in public works and, according to Police Jury treasurer Brad Cammack, the Police Jury has few options to deal with the shortfall.

"I believe that taking drastic measures is the only option," Cammack told the Police Jury at a recent meeting. "The drastic measures are reducing the amount of services you provide."

Public works director John Tom Murray agreed, but he raised the idea of another solution: the creation of road districts to levy taxes in specified areas of the parish to finance road construction there.
