Toney wants federal trial delayed

Ouachita Parish Sheriff Royce Toney wants his trial on federal charges delayed so his attorney can have more time to prepare his defense.

In a May 16 motion to continue filed with U.S. District Court in Monroe, Toney's attorney Michael Reese Davis said he had received "voluminous discovery" from the government, much of which would require forensic analysis. Davis also contended that there were several disputes with prosecutors that must be settled before the case could go to trial, which is scheduled to begin July 16.

"In addition to discovery disputes and pending motions, the government has indicated that Sheriff Toney will be indicted on new charges shortly," Davis's motion stated. "However, the government has so far refused to discuss those pending charges with the defense."
