Two regional centers receive grant

Literacy Initiative for North Louisiana Communities has been awarded $65,000 from the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy to maintain their Family Literacy centers in the Northern region of the state.

The two remaining centers in the region will continue to offer the four component model: adult education, early childhood education, parenting education and parent-and-child-together time. Parents bring their children with them to the center, so the parent is learning along with the child.

Ouachita Family Literacy Center is located in Monroe, within the premises of the Louis Locke Division of the Monroe Housing Authority. The center reaches out to 20-plus families from the complex and the surrounding areas. Ouachita Family Literacy Center serves a high percentage of families who are below the poverty level.
