Students in the Ouachita Parish School System are out for the summer, but their teachers are still at work.

Superintendent Bob Webber said the School Board added extra professional development days, both now and prior to the start of school in August, to prepare teachers for what promises to be a year of changes. The reason is two-fold: the phase-in of the state-mandated common core curriculum, and a new teacher evaluation program called Compass.

According to Webber, the common core curriculum will be implemented in kindergarten through second grades beginning in the fall. It will be the same curriculum that over 40 states throughout the country will be teaching
The phase-in starts with math, he said. Then ELA, or English Language Arts, will be developed through the school year. Because the program was not in its final form, Webber added, it was difficult to be prepared.
