The Citizen

Citizenship is one of the six pillars of our school system's Character Counts! program. When older students hear the word "citizenship," they sometimes roll their eyes and groan.

They remember memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution or Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. These and many others are very important documents that every American needs to know and understand, but teaching the concept of citizenship should begin at a very early age according to the child's level of understanding.

The classroom lessons that I teach on bullying are very similar to the lessons on being a good citizen, especially recognizing that every person has rights and responsibilities. Here are some things that both anti-bullying and citizenship lessons have in common:
