House passes the buck

Less than three weeks remain until the end of the legislative session, but lawmakers have yet to lay to rest the state's proposed $25.5 billion budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

House Bill 1, as the budget is known, passed out of the House of Representatives late Friday, but not before representatives attached an amendment to the bill that would require state Commissioner of Administration Paul Rainwater to identify some $267 million in additional cuts the budget.

The amendment was aimed at removing virtually all non-recurring revenues that were included in the proposed budget that Gov. Bobby Jindal offered in February for the new fiscal year.
