City school board considers audit

The Monroe City School Board may request an independent audit of three separate sales tax funds.

The finance committee will make that recommendation to the city School Board on May 22, in the wake of a controversy surrounding the school system's so-called 13th check.

Superintendent Kathleen Harris asked for the audit to clear up what she called repeated questions about how sales taxes are used to pay the 13th checks to the system's 1,400 employees. Harris said such an audit could clear up much of the ongoing confusion surrounding the distribution of a 13th check each year.
"The finance committee will bring that recommendation to the board on the 22nd," said School Board member Vicky Krutzer.
