Less service a solution to financial problems?

Is your mail late again? If not, it may happen soon. US Postmaster General Donahoe is convinced that less service is a solution to his financial problems. He and his predecessor have slashed expenses and sadly, more than 247,000 employees since 2000. Under similar constraints many businesses "slash" until it hurts. Delivery service is now hurting.
Just examine the departure times of postal trucks from mail processing centers where mail from now closed centers has been heaped onto the remaining centers. Even under the reduced mail volume from a weak economy many delivering carriers are now waiting for their daily mail to arrive before they can deliver the mail. Overtime payments are at record highs due to poor management of the remaining employees.
Your local Postmaster (if you have one) is powerless to help. He or she is busy juggling late mail, adjusting route changes and dealing with problems caused by personnel cuts all the while listening to mandatory teleconferences for hours every day.
What can we do? First, thank your local mail carrier. Carriers, not machines, deal with late mail and cheerfully make their rounds to get your mail out ASAP.
Second, call or write your US Senators and Congressman and tell them Donahoe needs to be replaced with a manager who understands that reduced service is not the answer. We need a Postmaster General who has the skills to develop new concepts and products, not just slash services.
