Pay raises, pensions eat up surplus

Twelve months of increased sales tax collections in West Monroe put the city in a position to post a $700,000 operating surplus for the current fiscal year.

City finance director Benny Chelette delivered that news at a regular meeting of the West Monroe Board of Aldermen Tuesday night.

Chelette said city employees will receive a two-percent raise in the new fiscal year that begins July 1. The raises will be funded with surplus monies generated in the current fiscal year, which ends June 30. Also eating a big chunk of the current fiscal year budget are the city's increased pension contributions for employees.
