Gigi Waters remembers meeting under a tree in the Riverbend community. The meeting was to discuss opening a community center to serve one of West Monroe's poorest communities.

That was in 1994.

Friday morning, the West Monroe Community Center will cut the ribbon on its latest addition: an 8,000 square foot multipurpose facility that will provide additional space to house hurricane evacuees.

"We are equipped," said Waters, finance director and events coordinator at the community center. "We have showers and everything else necessary to help people when they need it."
