Sterlington makes progress on drainage work

The Sterlington Board of Aldermen approved an "urgent need" resolution to clarify the terms of funding for a drainage project.

Drainage in the Highland Subdivision, particularly on Taylor Street, has been a perennial problem for the town.

Aldermen Caesar Velasquez said that during Hurricane Gustav, he had six inches of water in his home, and others also flooded. Poor drainage also cause sewage backups into homes and ditches when heavy rains stressed the system.

Velasquez and Alderman Ron Hill said Sterlington had taken steps to alleviate the problems, and the pace had increased since Gustav. The town removed some culverts that were slowing the flow of water.
