Gilmore, Stevens remain out on bail

Two former Monroe City Councilmen convicted of bribery and extortion will remain free on bond pending the outcome of appeals the men have filed.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Hayes granted a request for bail pending appeal last week.

Last month, Arthur Gilmore and Red Stevens were sentenced to more than three years each in federal prison for schemes to extract bribes from local businessman Eddie Hakim.

At the April 16 sentencing, attorneys representing Gilmore and Stevens signaled their intention to appeal. Also at the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Robbie James ordered the men to report to federal prison by June 2.
