Counselor's Corner: My kid would never do that! By Nancy Blanchard Special to The Citizen
There is a new series on Dateline NBC called "My Kid Would Never Do That!" Hidden cameras film children in different situations as they make tough choices. Parents watch the scenarios and predict what choices their own children will make. Child behavior experts also watch and share tips that will help children prepare for these situations in real life.
Last Sunday's show was about cheating. Teen actors are pretending to cheat and encouraging others to do the same. Most parents predicted that their children would not cheat, but when faced with peer pressure in the scenarios, many children made the choice to cheat.
The "cheating" actors reported that it was harder to cheat when someone spoke up and said it was wrong. Child educational psychology experts say that cheating is "very prevalent" and that "most parents are not aware" that their children are cheating; however, it will catch up to them later when their reported scores do not match their abilities. Also, since cheating is "taking the easy way out," it creates a poor work ethic in students, and work ethic is the most important asset employers seek. ....For the full story, subscribe to the The Ouachita Citizen's NEW E-Edition! |
