Headed into Friday's quarterfinal game, the Sterlington Panthers (23-3) knew they were going see the toughest opponent of the season – the 2011 Class 3A defending state champions –Catholic – New Iberia Lady Panthers (19-9).

Sterlington put up a great fight, but it wasn't enough as Catholic took the 11-4 decision.

"They hit the ball very well," Sterlington Coach Boyd Cole said. "It was there day, we just didn't get the hits."

Sarah Gandy (1-3, 1HR) and Taylor Wilson (2-3, 2-2B) continued their outstanding play throughout the contest. Gandy, who threw six innings for the Lady Panthers, struck out four, allowed eleven hits with two base-on-balls in the loss.

Catholic- New Iberia was led on the mound by Chelsie Schales who pitched seven innings with four strikeouts, five hits, and five base-on-balls in picking up the win for the Lady Panthers.

Even in defeat, the Sterlington Lady Panthers have a reason to hold their high. With only two seniors graduating, this team could very well return to Sulphur next season.

"I don't know if we will ever be able to replace a six year starter at catcher – like Caitlin Dupree," Coach Cole said. "She has been with me for so many years. Just like our 1st baseman – Allana Johnson - a third year starter. Those girls are team players."
