Summer reading strengthens learning

With just a few weeks left in the school year, area school kids are looking forward to a lazy summer of vacations, no test and, even better, no homework.

In recent years, though, students of area schools have had one assignment that some teachers believe is one of the more beneficial activities a student can undertake: reading books.

"Any reading is important, especially when they aren't getting it daily at school," said Celli Bryan, a 5th Grade English and language arts teacher at Woodlawn Elementary.

Bryan touts summer reading as an important part of improving knowledge retention.
