The NELA Genealogical & Historical Society met Sunday, April 15, in the main library on Stubbs Avenue in Monroe. Lourine Baff gave the program.

Her topic was "Suggestions for Researching Your Ancestry". Her program had three topics: DNA, Correspondence, and the 1940 Census. Baff began by explaining a little about what makes up DNA. 

Baff told which part of DNA is matched from the mother and what part from the father. It is a pretty complicated process, Baff said.. MtDNA (female) is passed from the mother to all children. Since it mutates so slowly it has limited use in tracking family lineage. It does not follow the surname. However, the female chromosome can be very useful in excluding a specific maternal lineage.

Collection kits from genetic genealogy testing companies consist of fiber swabs for scraping the inside of the cheek and vials to preserve the cells for shipment back to the company in the original mailer.
