I recently came across a list of the six worst investments in home remodeling along with the average cost and the expected return when the home is sold. We all justify our remodeling cost with the thought I can get it all back when I sell.

Unfortunately it often does not work out that way. I thought it was worth telling you so we can avoid these mistakes. Remodeling Magazine publishes this list and for 2010 the following made the worst home remodeling decisions.

HOME OFFICE REMODEL — converting that extra bedroom into the office of your dreams with all the extra wiring, lighting and built-in bookshelves and cabinets is the biggest loser in this list. The cost can run over $25,000 and the return is about 45 percent when you sell. In today's world of smart phones, laptops and touch screen tablets the modern office can be the patio, the coffee shop or even a park bench.
