WMHS celebrates La. bicentennial

Louisiana will celebrate its 200th birthday Monday, and students at one area high school are taking part in the festivities firsthand.

West Monroe High School is the first school in the state to host a traveling display highlighting the state's 200-year history. The exhibit comes courtesy of Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne's office. The lieutenant governor's office is in charge of the state bicentennial.

"This powerful and informative display, along with the teacher desk reference and other materials developed by the Bicentennial Commission's education committee creates an opportunity for educators to emphasize the teaching of Louisiana History in classrooms across the state," said Dardenne, a Republican from Baton Rouge.

The 10-panel exhibit highlights key moments in the history of the state, artifacts important to the state's history and culture and events that played an important role in the founding of Louisiana.
