Tax vote eases shortage

Sheriff-elect Jay Russell expects to begin hiring deputies to beef up staffing at Ouachita Correctional Center sometime in the coming months.

Russell plans to hire between eight and 10 new correctional officers to help staff OCC by July.

"You don't want to put just anybody down there," Russell said. "We do have some very viable applicants that have applied, though."

The new hires are made possible because voters on Saturday approved a 5-year, 9.2-mill property tax to fund operations at the parish's lone repository for accused felons and violent criminals.
