Cuts lead to larger class sizes

The Ouachita Parish school system continues to struggle to balance its budget in light of a projected deficit next year that could top $8 million.

Increases in insurance and retirement costs coupled with the state not increasing per-student funding through the Minimum Foundation Program have already hit parish school system finances hard.

Superintendent Bob Webber said the school system would have $25 million more in its general fund if state funding had continued as it was in the past.

With personnel costs comprising about 84 percent of the school system's budget, cuts in that area are virtually inevitable. Webber said he remains hopeful that most of those cuts can be made through attrition.
