Walsworth bill shifts decisions to BESE

Sen. Mike Walsworth wants to make it easier for school systems to increase student-teacher ratios in some classrooms.

A bill introduced by Walsworth emerged without objection from the Senate Education Committee Tuesday and was approved by the full Senate Wednesday afternoon. Walsworth's legislation is now headed to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Walsworth said the bill is an attempt to move some decisions made by the Legislature to the local school level, where they should be made.

"It's an effort to try to allow our school systems to have a little bit more flexibility with the things that they do," said Walsworth, R-West Monroe.
