Gilmore, Stevens begin appeals

Arthur Gilmore and Red Stevens have asked U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Hayes to allow them to remain free on bond pending the outcome of appeals lawyers for both men filed earlier this week.

Gilmore and Stevens were convicted last year on two counts each of violating the RICO and Hobbs acts for extracting bribes from Monroe businessman Eddie Hakim.

On April 16, U.S. District Court Judge Robbie James sentenced Gilmore to 41 months and Stevens to 51 months. James ordered both men to report to prison in June.

At the sentencing, James said he set the date for prison sentences to allow the men adequate time to appeal. However, federal court rules require notices of appeal and any request for bail pending those appeals must be filed within seven days.
