Sterlington hires new officer

A new police officer will be patrolling the Town of Sterlington soon.

The Sterlington Board of Aldermen approved a hiring request from Police Chief Barry Bonner at its regular meeting Tuesday night.

Aldermen went into executive session for about half an hour before voting unanimously to hire David Elahi.

Bonner said Sgt. Jacob Greer gave notice that he will be leaving his job for a position with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office.

Elahi's hiring will keep the police force at its current level of six employees. His initial pay will be $25,000 a year. That will increase to $31,000 a year after he completes police academy training.
