City School Board weighs retirement incentives

The Monroe City School Board will weigh possible savings from a retirement incentives plan that could lead to lower personnel costs and smaller class sizes.
The School Board entertained the idea at a regular meeting Tuesday, when staffers brought the idea forward for consideration.

School Board member Rodney McFarland said paying longer-service teachers to retire could help save the system significant amounts of money at a time when Monroe City Schools is operating at a deficit.

"I really think the board needs to take a very good look at that in order to help us get these numbers down," McFarland said.

Board member Vickie Krutzer said she was in favor of reducing the numbers and was not against a retirement incentive plan per se. However, Krutzer suggested the matter be referred to the School Board's finance committee for further evaluation.
