Council approves low-income development

A planned expansion to a residential development that caters to renters on lower or fixed incomes will move forward in Monroe's economically challenged Booker T. Washington community.

At a meeting of the Monroe City Council held last week, developers asked the council to set aside a ruling from the city's Planning and Zoning Commission to deny subdivision approval for Byers Estates IV, the fourth phase of development in the Byers Estates subdivision.

According to developers, the area to be developed would constitute a tract of more than 40 homes that would cater to lower-end rental real estate.

Representatives of Standard Enterprises noted the homes would be well-maintained and, like an earlier development in Byers Estates, occupied by typically long-term tenants.
