Riser's gun rights bill advances

Legislation that would afford Louisiana residents some of the strongest gun rights in the country sailed through the Senate late Monday on a 31-6 vote.

Senate Bill 303 by Sen. Neil Riser is a proposed constitutional amendment that's now headed to the House of Representatives for consideration. Like the Senate, the House must approve the bill by a two-thirds vote since it is a proposed constitutional amendment.

If Riser's measure is approved by the House and Gov. Bobby Jindal signs it, voters statewide will decide its fate in the Nov. 6 general election.

"We would have the strongest gun rights in the nation if we pass this," said Riser, R-Columbia.
