Monroe Council vacancies in Jindal's hands

Gov. Bobby Jindal will fill two empty seats on the Monroe City Council left vacant by the suspensions of Arthur Gilmore and Red Stephens.

The suspensions arose after U.S. District Court Judge Robbie James reinstated bribery and racketeering convictions against the two men, who were convicted last year. Sentencing in that matter has been set for April 26.

Gilmore and Stephens were suspended from the City Council in late March. State law requires the City Council to make appointments to fill vacant seats with interim council members within 10 days of the suspensions.

City Council Chairman Jay Marx set a special meeting for Monday, April 9 – the last day of the 10-day window. He chose that day because it was the first time City Councilman Gretchen Ezernack could attend.
