Glenwood Regional Medical Center's new Senior Care Center expects to welcome its first patients by the end of the month.

The Center will offer both inpatient and outpatient counseling and treatment services for people age 50 or older who have mental health problems.

Glenwood CEO Ron Elder said it became apparent that a geriatric psychiatric services center was needed in this area, a need which became increasingly evident after Hurricane Katrina.

"Over time, we evaluated the marketplace, and since Katrina there's been a real void in psychiatric care throughout the state," Elder said. "We made a decision, with the data that we looked at, that we needed to go in to the geriatric psychiatric business."
