Cultura guest speaks about identity theft Cultura Book Club held their March meeting at the home of member Julia Sers. President Peggy Henderson opened the meeting and led the group in the Club Collect. The members brought food for the family they are assisting during the Easter season. Chairman Jean Halsell will be delivering the items later.
In the absence of vice president Montez Branch, the president introduced the speaker for this meeting: Jo Ann Deal, who is with the Better Business Bureau.
She first showed an enlightening video that brought out many ways in which identity theft can occur. Club members were advised to always shred documents containing personal information; protect Social Security Numbers by never carrying in a purse or wallet; never give out personal information on the phone, through the mail or over the Internet. In the event of identity theft, a victim should contact creditors immediately and follow up with written correspondence, contact the police and check your credit report. Also, contact ftc.gov/idtheft.
