Primary voting low in Ouachita

Lower than expected voter turnout in Ouachita Parish drove election results in Saturday's primary election.

Parish-wide, some 85,636 voters were eligible to take part in the various state and local elections for municipal offices and party posts. According to complete but unofficial returns posted on the Secretary of State web site, about 16,600 parish voters went to the polls.

That represented a parish-wide turnout of less than 20 percent.

The turnout was slightly higher in the city of Monroe where voters not only took part in the Republican and Democratic presidential preference primaries but also cast ballots for Monroe mayor.
