A massive 2.5-mile sidewalk project will connect the neighborhoods on one end of West Monroe to businesses and residential neighborhoods on the opposite end of the city.

The state Department of Transportation and Development approved the $2.2 million project, which will see construction and repair of sidewalks along Cypress Street from Bridge Street to Warren Drive, according to city engineer Robbie George.

George said the project is in the earliest portion of the design phase.
"We are just starting the planning stage," George said. "The tentative letting date for the project to advertise for construction bids is sometime in the late spring or early summer of 2013."
