Counselor's Corner: Perseverance a critical skill

My brothers, sister, and I heard our parents' words, "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well" so much while growing up that it was ingrained in our personalities. These days, many of the children in our schools give up too easily and miss out on the satisfying feelings of accomplishment that come with hard work. Unfortunately, some will never recognize what they are capable of achieving because they tell themselves, "It's too hard; I can't do it."

A professor at Stanford University studied 1,500 gifted children for several decades and found that high intelligence was a poor predictor of success. Only a small percentage of the highly intelligent group was successful. Those who did succeed had this in common: they learned the value of perseverance and not giving up, and they had all learned it before they finished high school. The trait of perseverance was THE most critical trait in helping them succeed!
