A veterans' veteran, Warren Smiley dies

Local veterans' affairs activist Warren Smiley has died.

Eighty-eight years old at the time of his death, Smiley died late last week at his home in Monroe. A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the American Legion on Forsythe Avenue.

For more than 30 years, Smiley was a fixture in the Louisiana veterans' community, serving in leadership roles with the American Legion and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, or ESRG.

"He devoted his whole retirement years to veterans' affairs and helping veterans," said Tommy Shoemaker, assistant administrator of the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home.
