If you first don't succeed, try again. It took a couple of chances for Raph Rhymes to finally land on the LSU Tigers' baseball roster, but the sophomore from Monroe's Neville High School has made the most of his journey and is currently leading the Southeastern Conference in hits.

Last week, Rhymes was key contributor to LSU success. Against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Rhymes was 5 for 9 with a batting average of .556. In the four games the Tigers played last week, Rhymes had a .538 batting average.

Prior to LSU's National Championship season of 2009, Rhymes attemptedto walk-on at LSU in the fall of 2008, but there was not a roster spot available for him. Undeterred, Rhymes instead transferred to LSU-Eunice.

At LSU-Eunice, he hit .483 in 2010 with 12 homers and 98 RBI. Rhymes led the Bengals to the Junior College National Title where he was named the 2010 National Junior College Player of the Year.

"Raph Rhymes is without a doubt one of the best hitters in the SEC and, more importantly, he's a tremendous young man," LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said. "He works extremely hard, he competes at a high level and he's a clutch player who always seems to get the hit we needin critical situations."

Raph is not the first member of the Rhymes family to play baseball at LSU. Raph's grandfather, Ray, played for the Tigers from 1954 - 1955.
