Lawmakers hit ground running

The 2012 regular legislative session got off to a quick start Monday.

Gov. Bobby Jindal used his opening speech to a joint session of the House and the Senate to make his case for the two signature issues he wants to lawmakers to approve — education reform and retirement reform.

Jindal called the need to improve education a "moral imperative." He said retirement reform was necessary because the state cannot continue to make promises that it may not be able to meet financially in years to come.
